About the Department of African-American Studies

Northeastern University's Department of African-American Studies offers a major, dual major, a minor, and elective courses based on an interdisciplinary approach that critically analyzes the history, culture, language, political systems and behavior of peoples of African ancestry in the United States, the Caribbean, Africa and throughout the Diaspora. All courses are open to all students.

Areas of Focus

Three traditions encompass the Department's academic thrust--African-American, African & Diasporic studies. The academic offerings center their attention on three areas of cluster studies: historical studies, cultural studies, and social & behavioral studies.

The Department's first area of focus is on the experiences of Black people in the United States, from the early days of colonization and enslavement, to contemporary issues, such as Hip-Hop culture and Jazz.

Second, the department focuses on the African continent, whose diverse cultures, social structures and political events keep Africa in the public eye.

Finally, African-American Studies provides a view of the African Diaspora, and the place of Black people in the world from yesterday to today, emphasizing the Caribbean and Latin America.
