NUBIA
Since 1992, the Department of African American Studies at Northeastern University has undertaken major projects on the ancient African civilization known as Nubia or Kush, centered in what is now the northern Sudan. These have included:
- Cooperating with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in their community outreach activities for the opening of the permanent gallery of Nubian or "Kushite" art (1992);
- Professional development programs for teachers, including summer institutes funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities;
- The development of a website called www.nubianet.org;
- Hosting the 1998 conference of the International Society of Nubian Studies with the Museum of Fine Arts and others;
- Collaborating with Education Development Center, Inc. in the project that produced digNubia, a traveling exhibit, interactive website, and video documentary about the ancient civilizations of the Sudan.
In addition, Dr. Timothy Kendall, an archaeologist and leading scholar of ancient Nubian civilization, has been appointed Visiting Research Professor at Northeastern University.
